Get ready, DCers. The pope is coming. If you live in the D.C. area, pretty soon everyone will be talking about it. Pope Francis will be in Washington D.C. September 22-24. He will then visit New York City and Philadelphia before returning to Rome. He is the fourth pope to visit the United States. In D.C., you can expect huge crowds and transit congestion. Here’s what to you need to know about parking and street closures during Pope Francis’ DC visit.

Parking

Parking will be tough. D.C. officials recommend taking the Metro. But if you drive during the pope’s visit, you can reserve parking in advance with SpotHero and get $10 OFF. Here’s how to do it.

Pope Francis DC Visit Street Closures

Federal government employees are encouraged to work from home during the pope’s visit. If you’re a commuter, make sure to check these road closures and allow for extra travel time.

The road closures are in effect from 12am (midnight) on September 22 through 3pm on September 23, according to the D.C. Department of Transportation. The Pope Francis DC Visit street closures are as follows:

1. Rhode Island Ave (both sides) between 17th St. and Connecticut Ave
2. M St. NW (both sides) between Connecticut Ave and almost 17th St. NW
3. Connecticut Ave (east side) between Rhode Island Ave and N St. NW
4. N St. NW (south side) between Connecticut Ave and 17th St. NW

Parking Restrictions

APOSTOLIC NUNCIATURE OF THE HOLY SEE – VATICAN EMBASSY

The following parking restriction will be implemented beginning 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, and remain in effect until approximately 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24:

34th Street NW (east curb) between Massachusetts Avenue NW and Fulton Street NW

The following parking restriction will be implemented beginning midnight Tuesday, Sept, 22, and remain in effect until approximately 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24:

  • 34th Street NW between Massachusetts Avenue NW and Garfield Street NW
  • Fulton Street NW between 34th Place and Normanstone Drive NW

The following roads will be closed to all vehicular traffic beginning 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, through approximately 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24:

  • 34th Street NW between Massachusetts Avenue NW and Garfield Street NW
  • Fulton Street NW between 34th Place NW and Normanstone Drive NW

***MASSACHUSETTS AVENUE NW between Observatory Circle South and 34th Place NW will be closed to all northbound traffic. Southbound traffic will be permitted between 34th Street NW and Waterside Drive NW. All northbound truck traffic will be diverted onto Q Street NW at Sheridan Circle NW. All other northbound traffic will be diverted onto Rock Creek Parkway at Waterside Drive NW. All southbound truck traffic will be diverted east on Garfield Street NW or continue south on Wisconsin Avenue. Massachusetts Avenue NW will be closed to all traffic intermittently***

THE WHITE HOUSE

The following parking restrictions will be implemented beginning 10 p.m. Tuesday, Sept.22 and  remain until noon Wednesday, Sept. 23:

  • Connecticut Avenue NW between H and I Streets NW
  • 16th Street NW between H and I Streets NW
  • Vermont Avenue NW between H and I Streets NW
  • H Street NW between 17th and 15th Streets NW

The following roads will be closed to all vehicular traffic beginning between 9 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22 through noon Wednesday, Sept. 23:

  • 15th Street NW between H Street NW and Maine Avenue NW
  • 17th Street NW between Pennsylvania and Independence Avenues
  • Constitution Avenue between 23rd and 12th Streets NW

*Exception* Southbound traffic on 19th Street NW will be permitted to flow westbound on Constitution Avenue to 23rd Street NW.

  • Henry Bacon Drive NW between Constitution Avenue and Lincoln Memorial Circle NW
  • H Street NW between 15th and 17th Streets NW
  • New York Avenue NW between 15th and 14th Streets NW

The following parking restrictions will be implemented beginning noon Tuesday, Sept. 22. The restrictions will remain until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23:

  • 18th Street between E Street NW and Constitution Avenue
  • 17th Street between Pennsylvania Avenue NW and Independence Avenue
  • 15th Street between H Street NW and Maine Avenue
  • 14th Street between Pennsylvania and Independence Avenues
  • Constitution Avenue between 19th and 12th Streets NW

*Exception* beginning 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22

  • New York Avenue between 17th and 18th and 15th and 14th Streets NW
  • E Street between 17th and 18th Streets NW

  • Connecticut Avenue NW – East Side of Street between Rhode Island Avenue NW, past the corner of Brooks Brothers
  • N Street NW – South Side of the Street between Connecticut Avenue NW, 100 feet eastbound, past St. Matthews Court (alleyway)
  • Saint Matthews Court – Both sides of the Street between Citibank and 17th Street NW

The following road will be closed to all vehicular traffic beginning 6 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23 through 3 p.m. Sept. 23:

The following roads will be closed intermittently to all vehicular traffic beginning 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23,  through 1 p.m. Sept. 23:

  • 17th Street NW between M and N Streets NW

CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS / BASILICA / SEMINARY

The following parking restrictions will be implemented beginning 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22. and  remain until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23:

  • 4th Street NE between Michigan Avenue NE and Franklin Street NE
